3/15/98 - TITANIC has now officially passed Star Wars to take the number one spot for highest domestic gross; and after only 13 weeks! It took Star Wars 5 releases over 20 years. Also, Titanic remained in the number one spot this weekend even with the release of Man in the Iron Mask!

3/9/98 - For a few hours on Friday night it looked as though TITANIC had finally hit its first iceberg, as newcomer "U.S. Marshals" led the blockbuster by about $800,000 in round one of the weekend bout. But TITANIC scored a decisive victory on Saturday and by Sunday morning was declared the clear winner with an estimated $18 million vs. "U.S. Marshals"' $17.1 million.

Now in its 12th weekend, TITANIC has earned a jaw-dropping $449.6 million, and will likely top "Star Wars"' record $461 million lifetime total sometime next weekend. If it holds on at No. 1 for seven more days it will tie the record for consecutive weeks in the top spot. Both Columbia's "Tootsie" and Paramount's "Beverly Hills Cop" remained box office champs for 13 weeks in a row. But pre-opening market research indicates that MGM's "The Man in the Iron Mask," could be the picture that finally knocks the James Cameron-helmed juggernaut from its perch.

3/3/98 - James Cameron's epic hit $1.01 billion worldwide, becoming the first film in history to reach 10 figures. TITANIC earned $45 million at the foreign box office last weekend, propelling its total to $583 million and past previous champ Jurassic Park's $563 million.

3/1/98 - TITANIC once again made easy work of the North American weekend box office race, selling $19.7 million worth of tickets. It has now topped the rankings for 11 consecutive weekends. The current Friday-to-Sunday period marks the first time it has slipped below $20 million. Once again, its per-screen average of $6,474 was easily the highest in the top 10. Since its Dec. 19 release, "Titanic" has earned $427 million domestically. Only "Star Wars" has earned more, with a lifetime total of $461 million since its initial 1977 release.

2/23/98 - For the tenth week in a row, TITANIC topped the box office list, earning another $21 million, taking the number 2 spot for all-time domestic gross at $399.8 million. Now only Star Wars beats it with $461 million, which should be overcome by the March 23 Academy Awards.

TITANIC has accounted for 27% of North American ticket sales since the start of the year. With few potent titles on the horizon through April, industry trackers expect the James Cameron film to continue to anchor business. The picture enabled domestic distributor Paramount to maintain a commanding lead in market share of 29.2%, more than the combined percentages of second- and third-place studios Sony and Miramax.

2/16/98 - Topping domestic box offices for the ninth week, TITANIC took the number 3 all-time domestic moneymaker slot from Jurassic Park. It grossed $27.5 million this past weekend (easily beating out three new openers), up from the previous weekend by $4 million!

2/10/98 - Making Oscar history, TITANIC was honored with 14 Academy Award nominations. The nominations are for Best Picture, Best Director (James Cameron), Best Actress (Kate Winslet), Best Supporting Actress (Gloria Stuart), Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Sound Effects Editing, Best Original Dramatic Score (James Horner), Best Original Song, Best Costumes, Film Editing, Best Makeup, and Visual Effects. TITANIC ties the top number of nominations ever given (14) with the 1950 film, All About Eve.

2/8/97 - TITANIC has held on to the top box office spot for an eighth straight week, picking up another $23.2 million, becoming the 4th-highest-grossing film of all time with a domestic total of $337.5 million.

2/3/98 - Another record went overboard last weekend as the rampaging TITANIC earned an unprecedented $50 million outside North America for the second consecutive weekend. In its second weekend in the U.K., the romantic drama hauled in $8 million for a heady $21.4 million in 10 days. In Italy, where foreign fare has performed poorly of late, it has grossed $22.6 million in 17 days. Other dizzying totals include Japan's $45.7 million, France's $39.9 million, Germany's $39.8 million and Spain's $16.2 million.

The soundtrack sold 100,000 copies in just six days in Britain. It has gone straight to the top of the classic music charts and ranks No. 5 in the British pop music charts. In the United States, the mostly instrumental "Titanic" score has ranked No. 1 on the pop album charts for three straight weeks, totaling sales of more than 1.6 million copies for the week ended Jan. 25. The movie has grossed more than $300 million in the United States to date, and it reined supreme at the box office in at least 20 other countries last weekend. from Reuters/Variety.

1/26/98 - Even though it was Superbowl weekend, TITANIC still took in $25 millon, down just 17% from the previous holiday weekend. Domestic (United States) ticket sales are now officially at $274.3 million, making it the 10th-highest grossing film of all time in domestic box offices, after only six weeks. Is even the Star Wars record of $461 million within reach?

1/24/98 - After six weeks, TITANIC still remains number one at the box office. In fact, last night (Friday) I attempted to see the movie for the sixth time, but found the theatre had sold out all showings of the movie for that day. As of last weekend, domestic gross was well over $260 million, and the movie just opened in Great Britian on 1/23, so we could be looking at another $300 million in international gross alone. at the Golden Globes

1/18/98 - TITANIC has won four Golden Globe awards (Best Score, Best Original Song, Best Director, and Best Picture). Congratulations to the cast and crew!

1/13/98 - TITANIC is now the first movie ever to make over $20 million for four weekends in a row. The total box office gross as of Sunday night was $198.4 million, with no sign of slowing. Last weekend it made a total of $29.2 million, down only 12% from the previous weekend.

from Reuters...
Titanic's near straight-line sales figures are almost unheard of in today's quick-burn universe. These days, distributors typically expect a film to finish its domestic run with between three to four times its opening weekend take. But "Titanic" appears on course to top out at more than 10 times its debut of $28.6 million. A final gross of more than $300 million is certainly not out of the question.

1/6/98 - TITANIC has been recently nominated for 8 Golden Globe awards. The nominations include Best Picture, Best Actress (Kate Winslet), Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Director.
